What are The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®?
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® are founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage which is an external, non-invasive massage that repositions internal organs that have shifted, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve signals and chi (energy flow).
Who Would Benefit From It?
Many women have a laundry list of physical and emotional symptoms that can be addressed and prevented with these simple, non-invasive massage techniques. By shifting the uterus back into place, the natural balance of the body is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by uterine massage. In addition, digestion, urinary and bladder problems can be helped.
Individuals with digestive disorders benefit greatly from the application of these techniques. Many of our common disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, indigestion, constipation, and heartburn may be assisted by these treatments.
What Are the Appointments Like?
Your Arvigo® appointment should be scheduled appropriately in the month (keeping menstrual cycle and potential fertility treatments in mind, if they are appropriate for you), on a day when you don’t have to rush out of the office to go to work or other commitments. The initial appointment lasts approximately 2.5 hours to allow enough time to go through our very thorough health history form, apply the massage on the abdomen and the back, and demonstrate the self-care massage to be used at home between visits. Follow-up visits are scheduled for either 60 or 90 minutes, depending on the level of care needed. Follow-up visits are typically scheduled for three to four weeks or as needed.
When you arrive for your initial appointment, you will be asked to undress to your comfort level and cover your chest with a towel for your privacy. Many people undress completely, and many choose to remain partially clothed. Bear in mind that we will be working with oils during this treatment, and even though caution is used, drips and stains may still occur. You will relax on our comfortable and warm massage table with a heated castor oil pack applied to your abdomen while we review your health history and goals for treatment. Feel free to rest, close your eyes, and allow the healing process to start during this part of the treatment. After, the castor pack will be packaged to go home with you, and we will work together on assessing and aligning your abdominal and pelvic organs. The massage will cover the area from the lower aspect of the ribs to the top of the pubic bone, as well as the corresponding section on the back; from the mid back to the lower back, sacrum, glutes and coccyx. Your private areas will always be covered during this treatment. Before finishing the session, you will be shown how to perform the self-care massage, to be used at home between professional visits.
What To Expect During a Session:
- A comprehensive review of your personal health history and current health care needs
- Abdominal massage focused on aligning reproductive and abdominal organs
- Evaluation and application of structural alignment of spine with attention to the sacrum, lumbar and thoracic spine
- Instruction in Self Care home techniques to enhance your professional treatment session
- Recommendation of complementary modalities including:
- Castor oil packs
- Faja (organ support wrap)
- Bajos (traditional vaginal steam bath of the Maya)
- Nutritional and/or lifestyle education and adaptations
How Quickly Will I See Results?
Depending on the severity of the problem, it may take as little as one session and as long as several months for the uterine position to be corrected and for the ligaments to gain enough strength and elasticity for it to stay in place. 3 sessions are usually the average.
Women often report a rapid improvement in symptoms and sense of wellbeing when self-care is performed regularly.
Are the Treatments Appropriate for Everyone?
Almost anyone, even a woman who has had a hysterectomy, can benefit greatly from the Arvigo® Techniques through improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and a decrease in the formation of scar tissue. However, there are certain instances when the treatment or portions of the treatment are contraindicated. Please call or email for a consultation to be sure that the Arvigo® Techniques are right for you. When scheduling your appointment, please let us know if you have had abdominal or uterine surgery within the last 6 months, have been pregnant or had a baby recently, have an IUD, or are trying to conceive (naturally or with fertility treatments).
What is Medical/Swedish/Relaxation/Prenatal Massage?
Swedish/Relaxation Massage is the most traditional massage found in the United States. The goal is to relax the mind, body and spirit through slower, repetitive massage techniques. Our practitioners may also include aromatherapy, hot packs and light stretching to encourage deep relaxation.
Medical/Deep Tissue massage is ideal when repetitive motion or stress causes aching joints, sore muscles, "knots", trigger points, "hot spots", or other painful points. This type of massage is a valuable tool in assisting recovery from physical ailments such as sports injury, accidents and trauma, and can benefit people with chronic ailments such as headaches, TMJ disorders and fibromyalgia. Our pracitioners may also include hot or cool packs, deep positional stretching, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, aromatherapy, linements, and Gua Sha to encourage restoration of movement and decrease in pain.
Prenatal Massage is specifically designed with the mother-to-be in mind! Our practitioners combine the best of Swedish and Medical massage techniques to not only relax but also relieve common discomforts of pregnancy such as low back and leg pain, ligament pain and leg cramps. Many women also find incredible benefits to receiving Arvigo® massage during pregnancy and postpartum
